How many ways can you sink a boat?

If you were looking for another Star Wars reference, I think Luke has me beat! Here's a meme to enjoy instead to explain what has been going on in the office this week.

During the week we were engaged in many of the intricate details of what it takes to design a ship. For example, Luke was going through his entire ship finding every possible way that water could make its way into the ship. Every door, pipe, hatch, window, and exhaust outlet had to be found and have its location written down because no one wants to walk into their room to find water splashing through the door every time the ship heels a little too far to one side! I was working with Marin on a spreadsheet for most of the week that helps make sure whatever ship we are designing at the time meets ABS regulations. The problem was that the last time it was updated was in 2017, and we needed to get it updated by the time we leave so that we can use it for a project. I think the number of revisions needed to make that spreadsheet work properly rivaled the number of revisions that the Student Organization Handbook has undergone in the past semester, and that is saying something (Luke said ouch to this). Nate is working on the internal structure of Luke's ship, making all of the frames, decks longitudinals, and interior structures so that they comply with the regulations. It is a massive effort and I am surprised no one is working on it with him.

We were also invited one morning to a meeting to talk about how to do calculations for the HVAC system on a ship. The most interesting part is that, according to regulation, the crew onboard need less fresh air than the passengers. I guess the efficiency gain from recirculating air is enough to justify giving the crew second-tier air! It is also very apparent that people are like Goldilox with their air. We don't want it too hot or too cold, or too moist or too dry, they want it just right.

Towards the end of the week, we were once again trying to find something to do over the weekend. We took a break from hanging out with our new friends and decided to go ice skating at a rink in a town about 45 minutes away from Rijeka. Unfortunately for us, the ice rink was booked up with multiple hockey games. We ended up going for a hike on a trail near the ice rink. It was a wonderful day for a hike and Luke was practically skipping along the trail like he was in wonderland. I can't blame him though, the scenery was beautiful. The trail we decided to take zig-zagged up the side of a hill, but Nate was a bit adventurous and decided to blaze his own trail and go straight to the top. He beat Luke and me to the top and we found him almost camouflaged sitting on a stump waiting for us. He then proceeded to speed back down the way he came while Luke and I zigged and zagged after him.

Once we were done with the hike we went back to the apartment and used the rest of the weekend as a bit of rest and relaxation. It was a beautiful day in Rijeka on Sunday, so Luke and I each went on a walk at some point in the day. I went back down to the breakwater and watched some sailboats moving slowly out of the harbor, and Luke went up to the castle that we have seen upon a hill in the distance that we have been saying we were going to go to but never made it to. We also had a really good meal of seafood. The pictures speak for themselves.
